Argentina has most important fossil deposits. Although many
of them correspond to deposits of the Era Paleozoica (previous
to the dinosaurs) and others to the Cenozoic one (later to
the dinosaurs), many of our deposits correspond indeed to
the time of the dinosaurs.
The fossil regions could be
divided of the following way:
• Northwest Zone (Salta)
• West Zone (Mendoza -San Juan- La Rioja)
• East Zone (Entre Ríos-Misiones)
• Central Zone (San Luis-Córdoba)
• South Zone (Patagonia)
West Zone (Mendoza -San Juan-
La Rioja)
Most important deposits at world-wide level with rest of the
first dinosaurs, from the Triásico Period (240 to
205 million years), come from gray sediments of the Ischigualasto
Formation, prov. of San Juan.
There have been primitive terópodos like Eoraptor and
Herrerasaurus, as well as ornistiquio Pisanosaurus, the oldest
representative of this group at world-wide level.
These deposits can be visited popularly in the Provincial
Park Ischigualasto, known like "the Valley of the Moon".
There are a suitable center of interpretation and guided visits.
Another rich deposit that involves later sediments to Ischigualasto,
is of the Colored, aflorante formation in the province of
La Rioja and the Mountain range of Mogna, in San Juan. From
dinosaurs prosaurópodos like Coloradisaurus and Riojasaurus
come there.
Their rest can be observed in the exhibitions of the museum
of the Institute Miguel Lillo de Tucumán and of the
University of La Rioja. Related Articles

Also from these sediments dinosaur carnivorous with crests
in the head, found by the paleontólogos Rougier and
Reuil comes impressive, and that are at the moment in study
by Andrea Arcucci and Rodolfo Coria.
These outcrops are in the area of the today National Park
Talampaya, place of impressive natural beauty, with cañónes
of arenaceous stops paredones of reddish that can be crossed
with the company of the guides.
Northwest Zone (Salta)
No stage of the history of the dinosaurs is so well represented
in our country like the delayed Cretácico.
Outcrops corresponding to sediments deposited in that time
can be found to the south of Jumps, from where titanosaurio
Saltasaurus comes small, that had the back covered with hard
bony plates; the small Noasaurus carnivore, of sharpened claws;
perhaps a relative of the Oviraptor and primitive rest of
birds that still had teeth.
The findings of first are in the collections of the institute
Miguel Lillo, of Tucumán, that has a small museum.
East Zone (Entre Ríos-Misiones)
Little known outcrops cretácicos they are frequent
in the zone of Columbus (Prov. Entre Ríos).
From rest of saurópodo Argyrosaurus, and its eggs come
there, a carnivore as large as tiranosaurio, and ankylosaurio
covered with armor.
All of them lived towards the end the time of the dinosaurs,
In the superior Cretácico.
Some of those bones can see in the Museum of Diamond and others
in the colorful but very recommendable personal museum of
the Dr Mateo Zelich, in the small town of Liebig, not far
from Colón.
Some bones of dinosaurs have also been collected in Misiones,
but they are not had I decipher suitably.
Central Zone (San Luis-Córdoba)
Although the pterosaurios were not dinosaurs but flying
reptiles, its rare aspect also makes object of great curiosity.
Of deposits of 120 million years back, in the beautiful Mountain
range of the Jaws, quite complete rest of pterosaurio Pterodaustro
have been collected guinazui.
In the Museum of the University of Cordova, on the other hand,
they have originating rest of several places of the country,
but without a doubt but the amazing thing they are the insects
and plants of Under Véliz, that include giant much
but old spiders that the dinosaurs.
South Zone (Patagonia)
This zone is but the dificil one to catalogue, since its enormous
amount of fossils causes that almost each place is interesting
paleontologically.
To the west of Neuquén and the south of Mendoza, in
the sediments that constituted in the Jurásico the
bottom of the Neuquino Gulf, an entrance of the Pacific Ocean
previous to the sprouting of the Mountain range of the $andes,
the paleontólogos have found and studied a great variety
of marine organisms like amonites (relatives of pulpy and
calamaries), and several marine like aquatic turtles, ictiosaurios
reptiles (great reptiles with dolphin aspect), plesiosaurios
(of long necks and powerful fins) and once in a while some
pterosaurio or flying reptile, that inhabited the coastal
zones and ended up dying in the sea.
Already on the continent, they left to its rest and signals
of passage throughout our country the surprising dinosaurs,
group that began to dominate terrestrial atmospheres from
ends Triásico Period.
In diverse regions, the nature contributed to preserve them
in sedimentarios deposits. Rest of these giants of the sea
can be visited in the Olsacher Museum, the city of Zapala
and ictiosaurio of more than 4 meters exhibited in the Argentine
Museum of Natural Sciences in Buenos Aires.
The period better represented in our country is without a
doubt the Cretácico (138 to 63 million years).
Even to the west of Neuquén, in the beautiful zone
of the Chinese river Dead, throughout route 40, has been collected
dinosaurs of the inferior part of the Cretacico, like the
rest of the formidable thorny saurópodos Amargasaurus
and Agustinia and the very small Ligabueino carnivore, but
small who a chicken.
In the neighborhoods of the Chocón and towards the
last moments of the early Cretácico, the beginning
of a time of true giants began to outline itself, as it is
reflected in the colossal Giganotosaurus carnivore, exhibition
in the museum of the Chocón.
Also saurópodos varied like titanosaurio primitive
Andesaurus and the diplodocoide Rebbachisaurus, whose original
rest can be contemplated in the museum of the National University
of the Comahue, in the city of Neuquén.
In addition, very little distance of the Chocón, fields
of original tracks of these dinosaurs can be visited.
Already in the heat of delayed Cretácico, emphasizes
the "raptor" giant Megaraptor, Unenlagia - nearly
become related the birds -, the surprising Patagonykus, of
strong and short arms armed single with a great nail, and
the unexpected "araucano raptor" whose known nearer
relatives are of North America and Asia.
All these dinosaurs, as well as the gigantic saurópodos
Antarctosaurus and Argentinosaurus, that are between the greatest
dinosaurs of the world, are in exhibition in the Museum
Carmen Funes, of the city of Huincul Seat.
The deposits of where they come are so near the city which
although not yet there are organized visits, is probable that
soon they are offered.
Also from Neuquén the small and graceful carnivorous
dinosaurs Alvarezsaurus and Velocisaurus come, that lived
between long serpents and abundantísimos terrestrial
crocodiles, all in exhibition in the Museum of the National
University of the Comahue, city of Neuquén.
Something more rustic but beautiful and plagued of fossils
is the Museum of corner of the Willows, in the north of Neuquén.
The province of Negro River has been a goal for the paleontólogos
from century principles, in special in the zone of Five Jumps,
where a very small full museum of original bones of the zone
works, including the only articulated unit of a Neuquensaurus
australis.
Tracks of great ornitópodos in the neighborhoods of
the Chocón
There were several types more of titanosaurios saurópodos
like Pellegrinisaurus and Rocasaurus.
From his sediments the enormous Abelisaurus carnivore also
comes, with a skull of almost a meter of length, exhibited
in the museum of Cippoletti, and the small and graceful ornitópodos
Gasparinisaura, herbívoros and minors who a chicken.
From the South margin of the rivers Limay and Negro, one of
the explored zones less but with an important paleontological
wealth, comes several hadrosaurios or dinosaurs of tip of
duck like Kritosaurus, whose skeletons can be observed in
museums like the one of Cippolleti, the one of Jacobacci Engineer,
the one of Lamarque, the one of Buenos Aires and the one of
Trelew.
But in addition some surprising dinosaurs like titanosaurio
Aelosaurus and great zones to nesting that would have corresponded
to the most abundant herbívoros of then: the titanosaurios.
The province of Chubut has offered much more the little rest
of the Jurásico (205 to 138 million years), with fauna
Cóndor the hill, like the spectacular rest of great
saurópodo Patagosaurus, of which I am a whole family,
and the Piatnitzkysaurus carnivore, whose skeletons are exhibited
in the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences "Bernardino
Rivadavia" of Buenos Aires and in the Paleontological
Museum Egidio Feruglio, of Trelew.
Ademas, the museum of Trelew counts on exits to the land to
visit the Miocene deposit of the Paleontological Park Miocene
Bryn Gwinn, in the near valley of the Chubut river. Ademas,
for but the small ones, offers the fascinating experience
to sleep in the museum (imperdible: with stock market to sleep
and toothbrush).
Much more to the south, in the province of Santa Cruz, they
have appeared fossil incredible, like the formidable nest
of the prosaurópodos Mussaurus containing several "pichones".
These animals lived in an atmosphere of leafy forests that
today, petrified, can be visited in the National Natural Monument
of the Petrified Forests. The rest of the small dinosaurs
are in the Museum of Buenos Aires. In Santa Cruz, the jurásicos
dinosaurs have only left tracks us, like those of the surprising
Sarmientichnus carnivore. When walking it supported single
two of the fingers of his legs, unlike the three of the legs
of the terópodos.
Perhaps it is indication that it took the other finger in
stop, with a powerful claw to the way of the "raptores"
Imperdibles are the tracks of the small Ameghinichnus mammal
there patagonicus.
No of these santacrucenses deposits still has been prepared
for the visits of the public, but their fossils can be seen
in the Museum of Buenos Aires.
